Bailiff Nichols had a bit of a crush on the cute reporter, Sam Badger, who covered the courts, so yesterday, when she asked if he would help set up a private meeting with Michael Witcomb, the local attorney serving as Doyle Jefferson’s public defender, he was happy to be of service. He and Mike were friends from way back, having gone to school together until Mike went off to college, and he got a job to support his girlfriend’s bun in the oven. Four kids and twelve years later, they were still going strong.

Since the DA’s office was just down the hall, Nichols did suggest that Sam meet Mike at his office in town. People at the court already knew he and Mike were friends—he couldn’t afford to be viewed as taking sides.

Friday Morning, February 10

Law Offices of Hanley & Wells

Susan Bloodstone, the sixty-something office manager for Hanley & Wells, waved a cheery hello to Mike Witcomb as he emerged from the elevator.

Tall, dark, and handsome, just the way I like ’em.

She continued to appreciate the young man’s swimmer’s physique—inverted triangle shape and tight butt—all the way down the hall until he entered his office, removed his jacket, and sat down behind his desk. He glanced up and caught her looking at him. She pretended to look at the clock over the door.

Oh, that skin and those dreamy, ebony eyes.

She swore law school was pumping them out younger and better looking every year.

Ignoring Susan’s obvious but harmless drooling, Mike smoothed his tie as he sat down behind his desk, placed his to-go coffee down on his right, and opened the file he’d left on his desk after last night’s meeting with Samantha Badger and her friend, Logan McKenna. He was glad Nichols had set up last night’s meeting with the two women. The file he’d been given on his new client was still pretty thin, so he was willing to take any opportunity to have a leg up before meeting with his client this morning.

Logan McKenna would be here soon, and he wanted to have the details fresh in his mind before they left for the jail. He needed to get his client to open up. To that end, he had planned on taking Samantha Badger along with him, as she was a closer friend of his client, but he knew her job as a reporter might set off red flags for the prosecution, so he’d decided to take Logan, instead. He would bring her in as one of the firm’s defense investigators. And in a way, that’s what she was. From what the two women told him last night, they’d already begun investigating on Doyle’s behalf.

Hopefully, Logan might get his client to open up. He sure hadn’t talked much yesterday. Then again, the man was probably in shock after the arraignment and who wouldn’t be? It’s not every day one is accused of murder.

He skimmed through the file. Doyle Jefferson. His client had a prison record, but that was for embezzlement, a non-violent crime.
